As I looked out of my window this rainy morning and watched the morning school rush, I was reminded of these lines of the song Memory from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.
June marks the beginning of the new academic year in most schools in India, and unfortunately in Mumbai, coincides with the arrival of the rains as well. Children precariously balancing in overloaded rickshaws, cars and buses creating a traffic snarl that is not helped by the pouring rain. I was watching a howling toddler being pulled into the school by the ayahs, and though I know from experience that in a few short days, the same child will begin enjoying her time in school, it is still hard to watch a crying child holding her hands out to her mother and being denied her comfort.
Crying children, new books and school bags wet and soggy within a couple of days, traffic jams ….. these are the sounds and sights of the new school year! Yes, a new year has begun….. (Photo from www.stockpicturesforeveryone.blogspot.com)
