Academic writing pays very well but these will be domain specific and you need to have a thorough knowledge about the workings here and the cutting edge research/developments. Travel writing is equally well-paying but you need to be able to go off the beaten track, rough it out at times and think out-of-the-box for ideas. With the IT industry booming, there is great demand for people who
have good writing skills and the ability to understand technical details. You may not be a programmer but if you can figure out what the programmer and business analyst are saying and put it down in a language easily understood by a layman, you could become a tech writer.
What suggestions do you have for high school students who want to make a mark in this profession? What can they do to prepare themselves for a career in writing?

Start out small, maybe with your school magazine, neighbourhood gazette, and city newspapers’ school sections. There are a number of magazines for children these days and lots of publishing houses are catering to children writing for children. Check these options out on the Internet and start liaising now. Don’t be frustrated if your writing gets rejected a few times. Keep trying and you are bound to get through.
