In an age where most people judge a book by its cover, the art and knowledge of design assumes paramountimportance in every field and every industry, even as certain industries revolve around design alone. While Content may be King, design is at least as important, especially if the content has to make an impact and catch the eye of the audience. Would iTunes be as popular if it were not available on Apple gadgets?
It is important to recognise that design does not involve merely creative thought. One has to be able to turn a creative idea into a practical result that is functional and achieves its objective of conveying a message to the target audience.
Career Options in Design
Design has come to mean so many things to so many people. Here is a snapshot of the spectrum of careers possible under the ‘designing’ umbrella:
Studying to be a Designer
Proficiency in free hand drawing, a keen sense of visualisation of 2-D and 3-D objects, analytical reasoning, and imaginative comprehension and expression are the most important qualities one should possess to be in this field. But the right academics credentials matter as well, and only students who have taken Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry at the 10+2 level are eligible to apply for admission to study architecture at the undergraduate level. You are also required to pass the NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) to get admission for the B-Arch course in any college. This exam includes a drawing test and a computer-based section for aesthetic sensitivity.
Courses in Traditional Animation, Stop-motion Animation, Rotoscoping, Computer-generated 3D and 2D Animation, Clay- animation, Photoshop, Human Anatomy and Drawing are a must for an aspiring animator. You will also need training in various software programmes that are standard in the industry.
Fashion designing requires talent and an eye for beauty. To succeed as a fashion designer, you should have a sense of proportion, an exacting eye for details, and a good sense of colour, form, and line. Studying at an accredited fashion design college is your key to success in this glamorous profession. Colleges like NIFT (with many centres across the country), Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, and Sophia SBKS Polytechnic in Mumbai, besides others, offer courses in fashion designing.
A Bachelor’s Degree from an art school or university with a Major in Graphic Design is essential to make a career in this field. A background in art history is also a valuable asset as it provides greater depth. It is also indispensable to have knowledge of PC and Mac graphic software.
