Good cop ! Bad cop !

Good Cop Bad Cop Parenting

Good cop ! Bad cop !

Most of you are familiar with this term. Frequently used in interrogating suspects, this process involves 2 police officers : while one plays the “good cop” trying to be sympathetic, the other one dons the hat of the “bad cop” and more often than not, the suspect comes up with the goods in front of the good cop. So what has that got to do with parenting, you may ask! Sometimes, mothers and fathers do play this routine with their kids. One parent will scold and threaten, and the other will try to cajole the child into obeying. I myself am guilty of trying this out to make my son switch off the TV ! Summer vacation seems to be synonymous with “TV time” for him and I end up telling him “You know appa will scold if you watch for more than an hour – please switch off and we can play a game of cricket”. Believe it or not – it works one in five times ! Do you have any interesting tactic that you follow to get your child to do things your way? Do share them with us to create one big idea basket of tips and tricks.

Like most mothers she knows, Ramya juggles between finding something that satisfies her inner self and doing something that satisfies her family! Mother of two children, a boy and a girl, her parenting philosophy is not so much to be a popular, cool parent as to bring them up with values that she holds dear. When not donning her 'amma' hat, she switches between being 'manager of Digital Learning at IIMB', 'payer of bills', 'cook', 'cleaner' and 'reader of PG Wodehouse and Georgette Heyer.'

I hope not :) From experience, I know my mom used to be stricter than my father (still is) , but that notion of her being the “enemy” kind of faded away as I grew older :)
