ParentEdge_Mag_Vol 7-Issue 3-web file 26In the past decade, a surprising change was seen in the real estate market of this country. More and more families started opting to reside in apartments as opposed to independent homes. While Mumbai is an early adopter of this model given expensive living spaces, other cities, including non metros, have been recent converts. This was seen as a positive change because the benefits of living in a gated society are many.

Benefits of living in apartments
While some parents argue that independent homes are better suited for raising kids, a vast majority agree in one voice that apartment living has countless benefits, especially for the younger members of the family.

Social Factors
Primarily, there are two aspects which deem apartment living more suitable for children when compared to independent houses.

More Children
In any apartment complex, the number of children within it will always be more than the ones you can gather from a neighborhood of many independent houses. This means that your child will get to interact and play with many more kids from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

This gives your child the golden opportunity to develop some much needed social and interaction skills. Before you know it, your children will be making friends with children from diverse backgrounds and interests.

Given that housing societies are enclosed structures, it is safer and more convenient for children to step outside their homes and play. In independent houses, especially in crowded cities, children either have to walk to a local park or resort to playing on the streets. Not desirable either way.

On the other hand, if you reside in an apartment, children can simply gather in the enclosed play area and have all the fun they want. Guards will be keeping an eye on them and strangers or fast moving
vehicles will not be around them to put them in harm’s way.

Extracurricular Activities
‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. We are all familiar with this saying and the meaning it  conveys. Children need enough play and activities outside of studies to give them a well rounded learning experience. This is why in most apartment complexes, you will find a plethora of activities revolving around children.

Hobby classes
Children inside apartment complexes have easy access to hobby classes and other events held inside the community. In contrast, parents living in independent homes will need to search for such classes in their

For parents, it is easier if such activities are being organised inside the walls of their compound. It saves time and energy from not having to drop children off and pick them up. Children save time too, which
would be lost on the commute to classes.
