My Experience as Student Editor at ParentEdge

During the course of my internship, I wrote about quite a few interesting topics. They included ‘Hobbies for Kids – Amateur Radio’, ‘Verbal Linguistic Intelligence’, ‘Importance of Model Construction’, ‘Books by Foreign Authors (not UK or USA)’, and ‘Numeracy Skill’.  Surprisingly, I discovered a lot of things I was absolutely clueless about before while researching these subjects and learnt a few lessons as well. For example, the article regarding amateur radio as a hobby was particularly interesting because I had never even known that this hobby existed. In addition, the editor managed to connect me with experts from a lot of different places, and for one particular article, I found myself interacting with people from Singapore as well as Mumbai while sitting at my computer in Bangalore! I also received inputs from LEGO in the US.

Working for ParentEdge was not only helpful and informative; it was also fun and not at all scary. The editor I worked with, Kritika, was extremely supportive and obliging. Her innovative topics invigorated me and made sure I was never bored. Her suggestions helped, but at the same time didn’t discourage me. At the same time, she was candour where required. She always told me if my writing wasn’t up to the mark and didn’t accept a shoddy job. This kept me both grounded and working hard.

As I sent across the final article of the last edition of the magazine I would be writing for, I felt some regret at this experience finally coming to an end. I had never realised exactly how much goes into a good composition. I have also evolved as a writer, and I truly thank ParentEdge for giving me the push I needed to improve.

ParentEdge is a bi-monthly magazine for discerning Indian parents who would like to actively contribute to their children’s education, intellectual enrichment and stimulation. The magazine’s premise is that learning is a continuous process, and needs to happen both in and outside of school; thus parents have an important role to play in shaping their children’s interests and intellect.

Ramya, fine attempt! The good thing is that you want to learn. You are developing a chatty style, which is good. We seldom commit big mistakes, but the small ones escape our radar. So, watch out for the small ones. It is nice to know that you have a good working relationship with ParentEdge. Ms Kritika Srinivasn is supportive and will be a big help to you. I wish you great success in your writing. God bless.
