This blog has been contributed by Mitali. She is a supermom to a four-year-old beautiful girl and is in her eighth month of her pregnancy with the second child. She has used all the steps mentioned in this blog with her daughter, in order to make her understand that the arrival of the second baby is a great occasion.
Having a second child in today’s day and age is like really climbing Mount Everest all over again. You have to be prepared to go through the sleepless nights, changing of diapers, breastfeeding the baby and being an alert zombie cum robot who is nothing less than perfect but wait…this time you will have the first one around as well and making the first child prepared that a new little munchkin is about to enter your lives is a step by step process and should be handled with a lot of care.
When to break the news to the first child?
If you and your husband are all ready to plan the baby and if everything seems positive and you both have been healthy, It can be a good time to introduce an idea to the first child that he/she may get a new and permanent partner to play with. This process can be very slow and can begin with you showing the child ‘happy’ photos of you and your sibling or pictures of siblings in story books. You can also show them movies where sibling love formed an integral part. This will help the child form positive associations about siblings.
How to break the news to your first child?
If your pregnancy test comes positive it may be a good idea to hold on till you get your first ultrasound post which you can definitely break the news to your first child. Here you can use positive sentences like “Your wish has been granted.” or “A new family member is going to be added to our family.” Always make sure that you use an excited tone and are in a positive mood while you break the news to your kid. If morning sickness or any other situation is wearing you down make sure you wait for the perfect day – recording this moment when you break the news can also be a great memory. If your kid is older than three years, showing him/her the ultrasound can be a great idea. To break the news on social media, many couples are opting the photoshoot option where the older child breaks the news. This is a really creative option if you want to be one of those cool parents!
