Losing the sense of hearing at a young age is traumatic, both for the child as well as for the parents. If not treated early, hearing loss can wreak havoc on the child’s language and speech abilities. But, if treated at the right time, there’s no limit to what the child can achieve.

Sharanya Manoharan lost her sense of hearing when she was just 11 months old! However, her success story is indeed inspirational.

Sharanya’s world was in tumult when she contracted meningitis when she was just one year old. She recovered from the infection but her mother knew that something else was amiss. Sharanya would not respond to her mother’s calls. A test of her hearing confirmed her mother’s worst fears.

The hearing loss took a toll on her bond with her mother. The distance between the two grew by the day. Finally, at the age of three, Sharanya was implanted with a Cochlear Nucleus implant at Hinduja hospital.

The cochlear implant unleashed Sharanya’s talents in academics and in performing arts. She started mainstream school in Grade Four and immediately demonstrated her intelligence by securing a merit scholarship. She also started to learn Bharatanatyam and to play the keyboard.

Sharanya has not looked back ever since. Her strong will power and the unfailing family support helped her secure another merit scholarship in Grade Seven. She has completed advanced levels of training in Bharatnatyam and has cleared Grade Two exam for playing the keyboard from the Trinity College, London.
