The “Grand” ParentEdge !

This post has been contributed by Srinivasan T.
GrandparentsMay be one will say that my stray thoughts are fit only for Grandparent edge but I am bold enough to post it in the site where only the 25+ moms dare! This is not totally irrelevant since this is also about children – the grand parents’ grownup darlings.
One day after gathering courage I call up my daughter to remind her about depositing the pending cheque in the bank. Oh! Appa! Was her first response (How stupid you can be to waste time on a phone call on such mundane matters-her untold thoughts) Very politely she adds “there was no time, I will do it one of these days. Right now I am finalizing the theme, games and return gifts for your grand son’s birth day party. You understand, no?” I mutter “yes, yes” and put down the phone meekly.
Next time I prod my better half to make the call for booking of train tickets in time for a family function at Chennai. My impartial daughter’s response was- what is the big hurry Amma? There is enough time. Right now I am busy in the office trying to plug inthe bugs in my project before the product release date. (Was I inwardly happy at my life partner’s discomfiture?) Needless to say we finally made the trip in the car.
The third time it was a different experience. The call came from my daughter very apologetically asking us to take care of her 2 children for a few hours as her maid had taken a day off and she was loaded with extra work in the office. “No problem” was our spontaneous response. We had taken care of you and your troublesome sister for so many years was our reasoning. This will be a cakewalk for us, we said. The cakewalk seemed eternal and the relief we had when we saw our daughter’s face finally can not be putdown in words. Oh, the present day kids are a special tribe—Too smart, Very demanding, extremely restless, —- and the list goes on and on. Now we both sympathize with our daughters!

ParentEdge is a bi-monthly magazine for discerning Indian parents who would like to actively contribute to their children’s education, intellectual enrichment and stimulation. The magazine’s premise is that learning is a continuous process, and needs to happen both in and outside of school; thus parents have an important role to play in shaping their children’s interests and intellect.
