Using Technology in Education

This blog post has been contributed by Srikanth Iyer, Business Head and Senior Vice-President, Schools Business, Pearson India

Imagine walking into an elementary school English class room. Students prepare to read “Huckleberry Finn.” Instead of pulling out paperback books students read the classics on a smattering of tablets. Students can pin notes to a page, click on words to quickly look them up both for meaning and pronunciation, and to easily pick up where they left off. Now walk into the next class room where its Science hour. The teacher is at a screen showing the different planets to the classroom. A simple touch on Jupiter enlarges the image of the planet on to the left of the screen and the right of the screen is filled with facts and statistics about the planet. Wait that is not all! The teacher is inviting a student to stop by at the screen and arrange the planets in the order of their distance from the Sun. Studentwalks up, touches the image of Mercury and drags it next to the Sun.

The above scenario a decade ago, could well have belonged in a sci-fi movie. However, thanks to the recent advances in the technology in the classroom teaching, today all this is a reality!

Technology is creating opportunities in education that were untold of, a decade ago. It assists education by providing an effective way to get instant information. It makes it possible to teach the same concept/standard in different formats that will appeal to various learning styles.

Studies have found that a technology rich classroom is the perfect place for specialized learning. Also when technology is involved, students are more likely to be engaged in learning. Students need to press buttons, solve problems, and manipulate the tools they have to achieve a goal. Studies recently conducted worldwide are showing that classrooms assisted by technology are registering increased student attendance and participation. When teachers and students are trained to use the technology, there are many tools to help track growth, give extra resources, and accelerate learning based on each student’s unique pace.

Having recognized the importance of ICT in education and the role it has to play in the future of education, many companies are developing products that introduce technology to classrooms. Pearson, for instance, has introduced DigiClass which brings integrated and interactive learning into the classroom. Students at schools enjoy learning their lessons through electronic interactive whiteboards because the subject comes alive and brings reality into the classroom. Most students learn by actually doing and physically interacting with a medium, as interactive boards give them the opportunity to explore and manipulate concepts of a lesson.
